Alcoa Architectural Products Celebrates 40 Years

24 September, 2011

“Wow! It does not seem possible. It’s seems like only yesterday when many of us started with the company, but this year our location is celebrating four decades of accomplishments.” ~Rex Giddens, 40 Year Employee of AAP
On August 12, 1971 a ground breaking was held for a new business in Eastman. Reynolds Metals Company started construction on a 34,000 square foot manufacturing facility. This manufacturing facility was originally utilized in the production of siding and related accessories for the Mobile Home/Recreational vehicle market. The new facility employed approximately 18 employees with an estimated annual payroll of $170,000. In the late 70’s, five heavy duty roll forming lines were relocated from McCook, Illinois to Eastman, Georgia. These lines were capable of producing both steel and aluminum roll formed shapes for industrial siding and roofing. Three of those lines are still part of our process today.
In 1988, ground was broken for a plant expansion to include the addition of a manufacturing line to produce aluminum composite material (ACM). Production for the Mobile Home market was discontinued at this time and that space was used for the additional plant requirements to support the ACM product line. Since the Reynobond© Aluminum Composite Material was introduced in 1989, there have been two major renovations and improvements to the basic equipment, and this line now produces “natural metal” composite products as well, including zinc, stainless steel and copper.
In 2000, Reynolds Metals Company was acquired by Alcoa, Inc. The location then became Alcoa Architectural Products (AAP) as we are known today. Many changes have occurred over the past 40 years, change of ownership, change of markets, but one thing has been consistent, good people with the goal of seeing our plant grow into the beautiful 120,000 square foot facility we enjoy today, making this operation a benchmark plant for Alcoa. Today, we have 127 dedicated and motivated employees, ready for the challenges that the NEXT 40 years will bring.
