Daily Maintenance

Regular Inspection
Inspect wheel periodically for safety.
Wheels wear, the same as other heavy duty parts. It is not easy to detect the wheel life, so it is recommended to inspect wheels more frequently, especially for older wheels or wheels under severe environment.
  • Check for damage or scratches on the wheel. Clean wheel and inspect all exposed areas. When the outer wheel is removed from double mount tires, check inside wheel as well. Since damages or scratches on the area hidden by tire won’t be visible, when tire is removed from wheel, check wheel entirely.
  • Check stud bolt hole to make sure it is not enlarged or oval in shape. A mud line flowing from stud bolt hole is evidence of a loose cap nut.
Inspection for disk wheel hub mounting surface wear
Incorrect wheel usage contributes to the wear of the disk wheel hub mounting surface. Mounting surface wear larger than 0.3mm, it will damage the hub itself. Therefore it is recommended to replace wheels with worn mounting surfaces.
Rim flange wear
Rim flange wear will occur due to the load from tire. A certain amount of wear should not have any impact on wheel function. However, a sharp edge from wear might damage the tire during the tire mounting process. Therefore, it is recommended to remove a sharp edge and smooth it out using a file.
The limit for usage should be determined using a rim flange gauge (made by Alcoa). Wheels with a rim flange that has been worn down to the usage limit, should not be used anymore. For detailed information, contact Alcoa Wheel Service Center.
Air Valve replacement
O-ring of air valve will become weak after certain period of use. Since it could cause an air leak, it is recommended to replace air valve once a year or at tire change. Valves may differ wheel by wheel, so use the specific Alcoa valve. It is prohibited to deform the valve.
Follow the instructions below to change an air valve.
  • Remove dust and clean valve hole surface of wheel.
  • Apply ALgrease, or equivalent anti-water-soluble grease, to the tire side of valve hole of wheel and the valve sheet.
  • Tighten the valve with torque of 12.7±1.4Nm.
  • On some vehicles, aluminum wheels cannot be installed. Please contact a dealer to see whether aluminum wheels can be installed on your vehicle.
  • If you feel an unusual sound or vibration while driving, park the vehicle at a safe location immediately and inspect wheels, stud bolts and nuts
  • Be careful not to hit the pedestrian walk blocks or other objects on the road. It could damage the rim flange area of wheel.
  • Use tire chain with care so as not to damage the wheel with chain or stopper.
  • It is prohibited to weld, cut, stamp or repair a deformed wheel. Any such process could reduce the wheel strength and causes serious accident.
  • If the wheel is exposed to extremely high temperatures because of fire, brake defects, wheel bearing defects etc., the hardness of the metal decreases, which may cause severe accidents. Therefore, usage of wheels that have been exposed to extremely high temperatures must be discontinued.
  • Inspect the wheels periodically. Especially when the tires are exchanged or rotated, inspect the entire wheel carefully, paying attention to cracks, deformation, extreme corrosion etc., and discontinue use when any anomalies are found. Using regular inspections, ensure that the wheel is only used when it is in good condition.
  • Stop using a wheel which has any damage, scratch, crack, distortion or severe corrosion found during inspection. It has potential to lose its tire or detach from the vehicle and could result in death or serious injury. Check wheel periodically and use only under proper conditions.
  • Overloading could reduce the life of wheels significantly, and could cause cracks and other damage to the wheels. Load limit is stamped on all Alcoa wheels. Always obey the load limits.
  • Rough driving includuing quick starts, stops and turns, is prohibited. It could cause damage to wheels and result in serious accident.

Daily Care

Aluminum has good resistance to corrosion. Alcoa forged aluminum wheels do not require any paint or coating. However, if salt or dirt is left on the wheel, it might cause corrosion. It is recommended to clean wheel periodically not only to protect it from corrosion, but also to keep it looking bright.
For cleaning, hand washing with high-pressure or steam is recommended. (Machine washing may cause scratches.)
After driving on roads treated with salt or other anti-freezing chemicals, or in coastal or dirty conditions, it is recommended to clean wheels thoroughly and apply wax rightly. If there is the possibility of adhesion between hub and wheel, see “Prevention for Hub and Wheel adhesion” in the  “Wheel Mounting” section.
When cleaning wheels, use neutral detergent or Alcoa recommended cleaner. Industrial cleaner with harsh chemicals could cause damage to the wheel. Strong acid or alkaline cleaner should not be used. It could cause corrosion or air leaks. After using detergent or cleaner, rinse thoroughly with water.
When cleaning, make sure not to damage hands by contact with the machined edges of the wheel etc..
See “Cleaning” section for Alcoa recommended way to clean wheel.
