Alcoa Foundation Provides Disaster Grant to Aid Victims of Earthquake in Japan

PITTSBURGH, PA – Alcoa Foundation today announced that it has awarded a US$10,000 grant to the Japanese Red Cross Society, Niigata Branch in an effort to assist victims in the Chuetsu area, Niigata, Japan following a series of earthquakes last week that killed 31 people and left more than 100,000 homeless.

The grant is part of Alcoa Foundation’s longstanding commitment to providing support to victims of natural disasters in Alcoa communities worldwide.
“We care about our community and wanted to help in any way that we could,” said Ryohei Maeda, managing director of Alcoa Wheel Products Japan, in Joetsu, Japan. “This Alcoa Foundation grant will help the relief teams of medical professionals operating the emergency shelters in schools and public buildings.”
The initial quake that struck the Niigata prefecture hit on October 23 demolishing more than 1,000 buildings, rupturing water mains, and causing widespread power and gas outages.  Landslides, aftershocks and cold temperatures have increased the damage and strain on the region.
Alcoa Wheel Products Japan Ltd. employs more than 50 people.  The business is part of Alcoa Wheel and Forged Products, the leading supplier of forged aluminum wheels to the commercial vehicle market worldwide. AWFP also serves automotive, aerospace and industrial markets with forged parts of aluminum, titanium and other nickel-based alloys.
